Job Summary:
QUALIFICATIONS
* Certified as a corrections officer by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training
* Vision shall be at leas 20/30 in each eye
* Depth Perception shall be sufficient to demonstrate stereopsis adequate to perform the essential tasks of the job; Visual Field Performance shall be 140 degrees in the horizontal meridian combined
* Have sufficient hearing in both ears enough to perform essential tasks without posing a direct threat to themselves or others, and with no average loss greater than 25 decibels (db) at the 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000-Hertz levels in either ear with no single loss in excess of 40 db
* Be 21 years old
* High school diploma, GED certificate or high school equivalency
* Acceptable driving record and the ability to obtain a valid driver's license
* Free from convictions of crime other than minor traffic violations and successfully pass an extensive background investigation, and pass an extensive occupational medical exam
JOB DUTIES
* Knowledge of criminal attitudes and behavior patterns, and purposes and methods of discipline as applied to prisoners under criminal confinement
* Learn the operations of a corrections facility; learn the control, direction and instruction of inmates individually and in groups
* Understand, learn to interpret and enforce institutional rules and regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality
* Read and interpret written material accurately and rapidly
* Learn to promote socially acceptable attitudes and behavior of inmates
* Make rapid, effective and reasonable decisions in emergency situations and take appropriate action
* Maintain accurate records; establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and a variety of criminal justice officials
